SEWING 101
“It was awesome!” responds a participant on Saturday, September 23, 2023, while participating at Good Medicine Way’s (GMW) ministry outreach event called, “Sewing 101— Learn How to Sew a Ribbon Skirt.” Under the guidance of Lora Church (Diné/Navajo), GMW volunteer seamstress, along with five former participants who now served as peer mentors, taught 12 participants the technical skills to operate a sewing machine and to sew a ribbon skirt, a traditional Native garment.
The outreach event attracted participants from Albuquerque, Belen, Laguna and Santo Domingo Pueblos. Overall, each of them beamed with joy, happiness, resiliency, and self-confidence!
A special recognition and appreciation goes to NM UMC New Church Development, James and Judith Kovalik, Cheri Burch, President, St. Paul’s ABQ UMF, Marilynn Crelier, Helen Wright, Roberta Begaye, Gene Stevenson, Laverne Wilson, Sháńdíín Church, Álilee Bah Garcia, Makaylee Twohatchet, and Nikki Castillo for their generous donations that helped make GMW’s outreach event a success! WOMEN'S CIRCLE
We invite women to join our book discussion every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Mountain Time for a virtual gathering on Zoom.
Our guiding principles of our Women’s Circle are discipleship, mentorship, truth, unity, relationship, camaraderie, intellectual growth, and humor. We gather to read a book and listen to one another’s reactions to it, pray, and participate in an open, safe, and supportive space to share a conversation.
Our purpose as a group is not to promote a judgmental environment, “fixing” one another, spiritual disciplining, or usurping another person’s voice.
The Kindness Challenge and The Inconvenient Indian are examples of books we’ve discussed.
As we grow our circle of Women Warriors, we hope to create relationships and connections which support and enhance our emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
